Practical Applications of Complexity Theory in Engineering

It is not necessary to explain the benefits of integral theory, self-organisation and complexity theory to the members of IFIS and the guests of this Online Colloquium. Yet, in the many more conventional contexts we are all part of, most people are less or not at all familiar with these principles. Collin will share examples from his work as an engineer in a leading Belgian company, showing how complexity thinking can be conveyed by just doing and applying it and by only explaining it afterwards. His experiments with these practical applications show that demonstrating integral and complexity principles in practice can bring about a stronger and more powerful learning experience to those who encounter them for the first time than talking about them ever could.

Shortbio

Collin Bootsveld (1967) has studied Chemical Engineering at Twente University, Enschede, The Netherlands. He has worked in the Netherlands on technologies to reduce the use of energy for many years. Since 2010, he works for the Colruyt Group on the introduction of new technologies such as hybrid and electric trucks, hydrogen for transport. His current project introduces cooling of supermarkets, based on natural refrigerants. In parallel, Collin has also studied integral theory and the use of consciousness techniques and has been experimenting with gradually integrating this background into his technical work.
